[ Background ]

Jorge makes music and I film stuff, so one day I suggested we record something together. I wasn't entirely sure what, but I rarely am, and he didn't seem to mind about that. We met a few times at his apartment and sent each other long audio messages, sharing ideas and proposals. Most of them fizzled out, while others continued swimming in a shallow stream. He introduced me to some classmates from the course he was taking. He told me about The Harpies, and Tamara, whom I already knew well, told me about the Girls Rock School. One day I contacted them and also emailed Amy, and they all invited me to listen, watch and film what they were doing. Another day I met Brian, the director of the Portobello Music School, and mentioned the idea of filming young children learning music. That's where it all begins, after all. "How old is your son?" he asked. "He's turning three," I replied. "Well, bring him along and just join the class," he told me, and that's how I met Marsailidh and his group. There were others, and more messages, emails, and calls, but these were the ones who said yes, and to whom I said yes. One summer day, I mentioned my new film idea to a musicologist friend. He recommended Christopher Small and his Musicking: The Meanings of Performing and Listening, and then I found what I was looking for, something that, despite its (apparent) simplicity, I hadn't been able to find on my own. If this little film about people and music exists it's thanks to Small, to Sergi, to Marsailidh and his children, to Brian, to Caro and Fiona and their colleagues and students, to Amy, Tamara, The Harpies and, of course, to Jorge.
